A Comparison of the Mechanical Properties of Trabecular Bone Between Micro-Finite Element and Meshless Models

 

We just received a great poster presentation from the University of Western Ontario where a comparison study was done between traditional finite elements and Altair SimSolid for predicting the mechanical properties of a shoulder blade whole bone. Pick the button below to download a PDF.

Comments from one of the authors Louis Ferreira, “We compared various methods of producing finite element models, including Altair SimSolid. The metric was apparent modulus. We also explored the effect of different micro-CT spatial resolution. The results show that Altair SimSolid compares closely with our field’s ‘gold standard’. The impact of this study is that Altair SimSolid is suitable for conducting mechanical property simulations of bone, and the implication is that these studies are facilitated by Altair SimSolid’s speed and ability to directly import the STL.”
