Asia’s largest design fair, Tokyo Designers Week 2014, was held from October 25 to November 3 in Tokyo, Japan, celebrating impressive and extravagant designs from many categories including architecture, industrial products, fashion, fine art, cartoons, robots, music, and cars.
Students from the Tokyo University of Science collaborated with Digital Studio to focus on digital object creation using solidThinking Inspire®. The design proposal was to have steel pipes balance and support each other on irregular rock formations. Production began in July, and the use of solidThinking Inspire was incorporated in September to validate the design, yielding a preliminary structure set by mid-October.
The free form structure, more of a sculpture really, took only two days to assemble! This installation provided a visually appealing example of superior structural efficiency throughout the 10-day exhibition. A presentation was made in front of 60 domestic and international judges on how to leverage solidThinking Inspire for design. The product, which incorporates topology optimization technology, was introduced to many designers and companies, and attracted many visitors throughout the exhibition. The student team received the Asia Awards School Exhibition Division Quasi Grand Prix from among 60 participating schools, which represents the second consecutive annual win for their use of solidThinking Inspire®! Congratulations!
A heartfelt thank you to all the attendees who visited the solidThinking Inspire exhibit by the Tokyo University of Science and Digital Studio. We look forward to participating again next year!
