2017 Gartner Data Analytics Summit Envision Altair

Three BI Trends from the 2017 Gartner Data & Analytics Summit

Envision was proud to be a Silver sponsor of the annual Gartner Data & Analytics Summit this March in Grapevine, Texas. The summit brings together thousands of Business Intelligence (BI) industry leaders, analysts, and analytics platforms to help organizations maximize the value of their data.

The four-day event had an extensive agenda addressing new trends and changes in the world of data analytics. In our conversations during the event, we saw evidence of a few trends for the future of BI:

  1. Storytelling with Data: Self-service BI and analytics platform users now have access to a range of capabilities to help them create compelling data stories. “Data stories combine visualizations with narrative flow. This combination can breach the barriers between people and data, engaging the former and delving deeper into the latter,” said James Richardson, Research Director at Gartner, “The goal of data storytelling is to encourage and energize critical thinking in exploring data insights for business decisions.” *
  2. Smart Data Discovery: The new challenge for companies is to bring together data and make it accessible to the entire organization. Kurt Schlegel, Research Vice President at Gartner, presented about data collaboration and setting up business objectives. The primary takeaway from his presentation was the need for companies to articulate their business goals and make analytics an integral part of the business model with internal and customer-facing analytics.
  3. Adapt for IoT: Per Gartner, by the end of 2019, one-third of Internet of Things solutions will be abandoned before deployment due to lack of data management capabilities adapted for IoT. “IoT is about business models that generate value from data but value can only be maximized if the right data management competencies are in place!” said Ted Friedman, VP Distinguished Analyst at Gartner **
