Slingshot Topples Cans: Simulated in RADIOSS, Visualized and Rendered in Evolve

As CAE engineers, we are proud of how we manage to tame the laws of nature in our models, but let’s face it – not everyone shares our passion for complex meshed models in sixty-four colors, cluttered with multi-point constraint spiders, rigid body masses, and contact definitions. Occasionally the targeted audience seems confused or bored when we present our hard work. As a complement to traditional post-processed results, it can be refreshing to let clients explore their digitized products in action without emphasizing the underlying complex numerical methods.

Let’s look at this slingshot example. RADIOSS is an extremely potent solver, packed with physics and numerical performance. Simulating slinging a steel ball at cans demonstrates a small flavor of its capabilities. However, traditional post-processing doesn’t really sell it.

The solidThinking Evolve renderer is a powerful, yet simple tool available to HyperWorks users. With a few clicks in Evolve, we can make physics come alive in a way that is just magic when presenting results or pitching ideas. My experience is that exciting animations travel further up the organizational “food chain” and garner high-level support. The resulting animations are extremely memory-light, 1.6MB in this case, which is convenient for publishing or communication.

Technical details: The hand is made from viscoelastic material and has a leather texture. The original table was replaced with a nicer one, available in Evolve. Rubber band pretension was accomplished by first accelerating the steel ball in the wrong direction for a couple of milliseconds. Maximum ball velocity:18 m/s (7 m/s after impact with cans).
