Held at the Detroit COBO Center, with spectacular views of the Detroit River, the two-day Altair Technology Conference (ATC) East gathered over 700 attendees to discuss optimization driven design methods, the evolution of the user experience, and the impact of disruptive trends on simulation.
Following welcoming remarks on the first day from Jason Napolitano, Senior Vice President, Americas, Altair CEO Jim Scapa opened the conference proceedings with his keynote presentation on the Altair Business Vision.
Featured keynotes following Jim’s were The Altair Technology Vision, by Uwe Schramm, Altair’s Chief Technical Officer for Altair’s solvers, optimization and smart multiphysics solutions and strategy, followed by a presentation on Competing to Win in an Unpredictable World, by Phil Guys, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President at American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM). Other exciting keynotes from the day included The Virtual Vehicle: Moving at the Speed of Engineering, by Randy Frank, Chief Engineer for Virtual Verification, CAE and Global Engineering Services, History & State-of-the-Art of Fatigue Analysis & Engineering, by Darrell Socie, University of Illinois, and User Experience: Demonstration of HyperWorks Next Generation to Maximize Multidisciplinary Productivity, by James Dagg, Altair Chief Technical Officer for modeling, visualization and math-based solutions and strategy.
For the first-time, members of the Altair Partner Alliance were invited to showcase their software solutions during Lunch & Learn presentations, which proved quite popular with attendees. Covering a wide range of topics from advanced simulations and math modeling to electromagnetics and design exploration, the individual track presentations provided an excellent forum for technological learning and exchange of ideas.
The exhibit hall was busy and extremely popular both during lunch and breaks as attendees explored exhibits and simulators showcased by our sponsors and collaborators.
At 5pm it was time to relax a little! The evening networking event was a great success as people connected on a social level with good food, good company and music.
The highlight of the evening was a 3D simulator providing a highly realistic virtual experience of walking on ropes over cliffs, flying through space, bungee jumping, deep sea diving and much more, offered for much spectator entertainment as people got completely “into” the experience.
Kicking off the second day of the conference, Iain Percy of Artemis Racing, an extremely talented and successful sailor, double Olympic and multiple world champion, held the audience captivated and spellbound as he presented Surface to Air: Design the Difference in the Americas Cup and recounted some of the key moments from the races.
James Truskin of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, a Technical Fellow for Body – Advanced Architecture delighted the audience with a highly popular presentation on Chrysler Pacifica: advanced Virtual Tools, followed by Vance Strader’s presentation Harley Davidson’s Transformation into an Optimization-Driven Design Company. Altair’s Smart Connected Product Innovation Platform was presented by Sam Mahalingam, Altair Chief Technical Officer for Altair’s cloud computing and high-performance computing strategy, followed by the insightful Simulation-driven Innovation – The promise, the pitfalls, and the business imperative for ever better products and business execution, by Mark Meili, R&D Director of Modeling and Simulation at Proctor & Gamble and The Future of Mobility for all the World, by Chris-Borroni, Future Mobility Consultant & Research Scientist Afreecar, LLC, & Media Lab.
Live products demonstrations as well as tracks covering ligtweighting, the future of simulation and manufacturing solutions once again provided engaging, informative, technical presentations before the conference drew to a close at 5pm.
