Follow Dragi: August 2015

I am taking the Altair bike on a journey! Follow me, and find out how it all began.
This entry documents my major rides in August.

All-Time Distance to Date: 10,883 Miles And Counting.

In Memory of Susan Cummings with CRR, Hope Waters, and Kensington Riders

Date: August 13th, 2015

Location: Rochester, MI

Weather: Sunny 74°F with 7 mph wind

Road Condition: Very nice, well-paved smooth roads

Miles: 21 miles

This kind of news always saddens me. Susan Cummings, a 50-year-old mother and avid runner and cyclist, was killed in a hit-and-run accident during a group ride across Michigan. The group had planned to ride 150 miles to raise money for the Hope Water Project that builds wells in Kenya. On this day, over 500 people participated in the One Day Ride Across Michigan in her honor from the West side of the state to the East. I was able to join the group from Rochester to Romeo. I have seen many news reports of cyclist-and-vehicle accidents across the state, even on my usual routes. It is a shame that these devoted athletes had to pass away under such terrible circumstances. Please treat cyclists like vehicles, give us space when you are passing by.

36th Annual Assenmacher 100

Date: August 16th, 2015

Location: Swartz Creek, MI

Weather: Very hot day, sunny 95°F with 10 mph winds

Road Condition: Very nice, well-paved smooth roads

Miles: 100 miles

Assenmacher 100 is a very fun recreational ride endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports since 1980. The ride goes through the farmlands and villages of mid-Michigan on well-paved, bike-friendly roads with routes of 20, 34, 56, 66, and 100 miles with great scenic views! It’s held every year on the third Sunday in August. This year there were over 350 participants from all ages in the ride and I rode with my friend, Chris Butler. I definitely recommend this ride!

Grand Traverse Lighthouse Ride

Date: August 23rd, 2015

Location: Traverse City, MI

Weather: Cloudy 76°F with 22 mph wind and gusts up to 30mph

Road Condition: Very nice, smooth roads

Miles: 75 miles

I drove up to Traverse City for a ride before I start my long business trip to China! I stopped by the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, which is located right next to Leelanau State Park. I intended to ride for 100 miles, but the thunderstorm rolled in while I was riding back. I rode in the heavy rain and wind for the last two hours, ultimately shortening my ride to 75 miles. I have always enjoyed a solo ride in the rain! Regardless, I was glad to be able to ride some miles before I head off to a country where I won’t be able to ride for a while. I’m already over 6,300 miles so far this year, closer to my 10,000-mile goal for 2015 and I can’t wait to get back and ride in the fall!
