With Altair, anything is possible. We can even make a small town in Germany the European capital of Simulation for 3 days. From June 26th – 28th , Altair hosted its 9th European Technology Conference with product developers, designers, IT managers, development leaders and simulation experts in Frankenthal in the Rhine/ Neckar Area of Germany. The conference discussed challenges, solutions and best practice methods for innovative product development. EATC 2017 was packed with keynote and technical presentations, industry sessions, networking and networking. Whether an attendee was already experienced or a simulation beginner, nearly 600 attendees took home a lot of valuable information.
Learning from Industry Leaders
Day 1 offered a great platform to learn from the best. The highlights of day one were presentations and round-table discussions about how to maximize the efficiency of dynamic machines, efficient design strategies for electrical devices, design for 3D printing, and math & systems modeling. In all four industry sessions Altair and industry experts shared their experience and expertise.
The audience learned that especially when developing modern products such as smart devices, IoT products, dynamic machines and products for Industry 4.0, it becomes increasingly important to apply modern manufacturing methods, such as 3D printing and to consider the entire mechatronics system of a product, including structure, sensors, actuator, controls in a system based simulation approach. The presentations of day one did not only show that development processes have to leave the common paths and that simulation becomes mandatory to meet the challenges of innovation, they also showed how these methods and tools are successfully applied in practice.
Parallel to day one Altair University hosted the Academic Day for the academic audience with presentations from students, professors as well as industry experts talking about the newest development in simulation-driven design.
Keynote Presentations from Renowned Companies
Day 2 was entirely dedicated to keynote presentations. James R. Scapa, Founder, President and CEO of Altair kicked the day off with an overview on the simulation market and its potential growth in the next years and gave insights into Altair’s business development strategies. Following James Scapa, Dr. Uwe Schramm gave an overview of the future development roadmap of the Altair simulation tools and emphasized the importance of simulation in all development processes of modern products, right from the start.
Industry keynotes came from Airbus, Airbus Helicopters, Renault Trucks, StreetScooter, Artemis Racing, Daimler, IAI, Schneider Electric, and Opel. All presentations emphasized the importance of simulation driven design processes. In addition to telling us all about the America’s Cup, Peter Bentley from Artemis Racing also showed how the Artemis Yacht reached an increase in speed by five to ten percent, thanks to simulation. The team used the Altair tools and a simulation driven design approach as well as consulting services from Altair Product Design to optimize the strength, shapes and thicknesses of, and the interaction of water and wind with the dagger boards.
Dr. Holzmann and Boris Künkler from Adam Opel AG presented the new Opel Ampera-e and talked about its development process. The Body in White (BIW) was also exposed on the main stage of the event during day two and three. The presenters talked about the challenges the Opel engineers faced during the development and how those were overcome. Among other issues, it was important to lower the weight of the vehicle to increase the operating distance of the electric vehicle. This was accomplished by consequently applying CAE tools, optimization and the use of modern materials such as high strength steel and aluminum.
Yoram Malka, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Israel Aerospace Industry, presented their work on a satellite planned to carry out a moon exploration mission. The Altair optimization and analysis tools as well as the use of additive manufacturing enabled a very light and robust satellite design.
Detailed technical insights on Day 3
Day 3 opened with another Altair keynote presentation. Jeff Brennan, CMO at Altair, talked about the Altair Partner Alliance (APA), a program that enables HyperWorks users to flexibly access third party tools via their existing HyperWorks license. His presentation was followed by insights into the next generation of HyperWorks tools. James Dagg, CTO at Altair presented the new interface and some of the workflows of HyperWorks that will make the tools even stronger and more robust, as HyperWorks users continue to expand their multidisciplinary explorations of simulation-driven designs.
Another highlight was the presentation of Dr. Philipp Berendes, Porsche, who talked about lightweight design strategies within the Porsche product development. After the first break, attendees split up to visit one of the six parallel sessions on Optimization, Crash and Impact Simulation, EM Simulation, NVH and Acoustic, Materials & CFD as well as Multi-body Simulation. Nearly 50 presentations offered detailed technical insights into the development processes of all industries.
The technical showcase of the conference provided attendees with the opportunity to learn more about the broad offerings of Altair and its hardware and software partners. Among the exhibiting companies we had booths from HPE and Intel (joint platinum sponsor), Huawei and HBM Prenscia (both gold sponsors) as well as Additive Works, asc(s, Chiastek, Componeering, FLUIDON, FluiDyna, Fraunhofer ITWM, GeonX S.A, GNS Systems, Ingenieurbüro Huß & Feickert, Laser Zentrum Nord, LOGE AB, Magna Powertrain ECS, MATELYS, Materialise, Mechanical Simulation, MFRC, NAFEMS, NovaCast Systems, PART Engineering, PDTec, and Synopsys. In addition to the booths the exhibition also featured many products that were developed with the Altair tools and methods. Among these a printed and casted rocker arm from Amazone, APWorks’ Light Rider, a VR application of University Frankfurt, a 3D printed molding tool from Protiq, a composite bike and many more.
The evening events and breaks offered the opportunity for extensive networking and an exchange with colleagues from all industries. During the Evening Event at the Hockenheimring we had a chance to go backstage at race track and race in simulators against each other at the dinner venue, located right in the middle of the track.
The 9th European ATC was a great event and showed us how our customers “Design the DifferenceTM” with our tools and methods.
