Altair South Africa recently hosted a group of 46 enthusiastic Grade 11 pupils from schools in the area as part of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) initiative. The idea of the day was to expose pupils who are considering engineering as a field of study, to the various disciplines and opportunities available to them.
It was important that the pupils left us feeling inspired and excited about engineering and the great things that are being achieved here in South Africa.
“This is the second year we have hosted the event and were thrilled with the response from the local schools,” said Gronum Smith, Country Manager of Altair SA. “We aimed to cover all the engineering disciplines with presentations, success stories as well as personal insights into our world.”
One pupil’s response in our post-event survey epitomized the success of the day – “this conference inspired me be patriotic to South Africa and it would be a privilege to be an engineer in this country!”
Local companies from various engineering disciplines were invited to join us to present and share their knowledge. Presentations from Denel Spaceteq, the CHPC, Stellenbosch University Industrial Engineering Faculty, Sustnet, Garmin (iKubu), Mix Telematics, Stellenbosch University and EMSS Antennas were on the agenda.
All the pupils were open minded, interactive and extremely appreciative of the initiative. The common thread throughout the day by all the presenters was work hard, to be passionate, take risks, be entrepreneurial and realize that learning never ends.
